This lesson is about thinking creatively and playing with your subjects. Janice also demonstrates natural light and strobe lighting.
The image below has flat lighting used with the ring light. If she would have used natural light the composition elements wouldn’t have worked for her goal (after image). In post, she made this into a black and white and added glow from Topaz. If she would have used natural light the composition would have been messy.
You can set your camera on flash and your colors should look good but if they don’t, check out this video to help you get your colors correct in camera.
While you’re playing with your strobe flash, play with your ratios and pay attention to the inverse square law. There is a PDF download (Light Sheet) to help you see the numbers.
Note: As the light moves away from your subject you’ll have more shadows. As you change your ratios you’ll have more shadows. 1:1 flat light 4:1 dramatic shadows.
